Know Your Child's Therapist

As part of a Special Child's needs, TREATMENT plays a BIG role in their Progress.

After the Diagnosis or Impression from the Doctor, different referrals coming from different people embrace parents as they take the next step towards their child's needs.

But what does a Parent of a Child with Exceptionalities have to consider?

It is the Parent's Responsibility to know the BACKGROUND of the professionals that will handle their child.

What Parents Need to Know? (In the Philippine Setting)

The child might need the help of Different Professionals during the treatment process. Below are some information that might be helpful for parents:

Currently, Speech-Language Pathologists in the Philippines are only small in number.  As of now, there are only 4 schools recognized by CHED (University of the Philippines Manila, University of Sto. Tomas, Cebu Doctors University and De Lasalle Dasmarinas) offering Speech Pathology in the country.
All practicing Local SLPs are graduates from these 4 Universities. Speech-Language Pathologists must be Certified by the Philippine Association of Speech Pathologists (PASP) check out the (click the link) Directory of Certified SLPS in the Philippines.

Occupational and Physical Therapists

Occupational and Physical Therapists are greater in number compared to speech-language pathologists but still not enough to cater the needs of the said population. There are also more schools offering the said course. However, Occupational and Physical Therapists MUST pass a Licensure Exam first before they can practice as Professionals. A PRC number is given to a Registered and or Licensed Therapist.

Why is it important to know the Background of the Professional handling your child?

We have to consider 6 Key Elements:

Assessment
Goals
Expectations
Progress
Time
Financial Consideration

Professionals handling your child must conduct an Appropriate and Initial assessment to thoroughly check your child's current skills and performance.
From the results of the test, they will then set suitable and individually planned goals according to your child's needs. Carefully planned and appropriate goals are needed to observe progress in your child. Better and remarkable Progress are seen when consistent therapy plus good follow up at home are provided.
Thus, Expectations of Parents to see progress in their child are met and also decreases frustration in the family and child when GOALS are set accordingly.
Time is also a crucial factor in treatment. Recent studies also show that Early Intervention is very important and shows remarkable improvement in children compared to late intervention. Financial consideration is another factor we have to consider in the child's treatment. We are aware that therapy might be costly so Children and their Families are entitled to receive HIGH Quality Services provided by the said Professionals.

Don't hesitate to ask or know the background of the professional that will handle your child, it is your right as a Parent.

Be Aware, Be Informed, Because it makes a Difference.
